He played 1 year of NCAA Division I College Baseball for the Lamar University Cardinals [Southland Conference] where he was teammates with future Major Leaguer Jerald Clark. Participated in the D1 NCAA Tournament in 1985 [Regionals]. He was drafted in the 22nd round (564th overall) of the 1983 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the California Angels but did not sign.
