Walker finished in 2nd place in 1997 in voting for the Lou Marsh Award as Canadian Male Athlete of the Year, losing to Formula One racer Jacques Villeneuve, prompting Walker to complain that he lost the award to a machine, referring to Villeneuve's car. Walker would eventually win the Lou Marsh award in 1998.
