Trivia and Player Notes

Member of the Gold-Medal United States Baseball Team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

Member of the 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series winning team, making the final out of the 2004 World Series. Mientkiewicz was the target of a column in the Boston Globe in December of 2004, in which columnist Dan Shaughnessy interpreted a joke Mientkiewicz told as a serious statement, and wrote about how Mientkiewicz was planning on selling the ball to fund his kids' college educations. Doug Mientkiewicz does not have kids. Likely as a result of this column, the Red Sox demanded the ball back from him, and he loaned it to them for a year. The current status of the ball is in the court's hands, as ofDecember 2005, the Red Sox sued for the custody of the ball. Mientkiewicz would be targeted in the Boston media and traded to New York (NL) before the start of the 2005 season.
