Played 1st base in high school and started pitching his senior year in 2000. Signed by Chattanooga State as a 1st baseman and pitched sparingly his freshman year. Became a starting pitcher his sophomore year at Chattanooga State while continuing to play 1st base and DH. Signed with the State University of West Georgia for the 2003 season as a relief pitcher. While playing in a Stan Musial Wooden Bat League in Atlanta in the summer of 2003, he was signed by the Baton Rouge Riverbats of the Southeastern League of Independent Baseball on 07/28/2003. Played 2 games with Baton Rouge and was traded to the Selma Cloverleafs. Attended a Cincinnati Reds tryout in Sarasota, FL on February 8, 2004, and was signed as a non-drafted free agent. Played the entire season for the rookie league GCL Rebs and then was called up to the Reds low Class A team Dayton Dragons for the last six games of their season. Philip was released by the Reds in January 2005. Signed in April 2005 and played with the Mid-Missouri Mavericks of the Frontier League of Independent Baseball.
