Baseball TermDescription
WalkoffAdjacent to any statistic, refers to a play that results in the game ending in the bottom of the last inning before 3 outs has occurred. That is, the home team scored a run or runs resulting in the end of the game. A walkoff homer refers to a home run hit to end the game whereas a walkoff walk would mean a batter walked with the bases loaded to score the winning run.
Warning TrackTo prevent outfielders from crashing into the wall, there is a non-grass/non-turf surface that warns the fielder that he is close to the fence and from there, he has x # of steps before he hits the wall
Warning Track PowerA hitter who is considered less than a power hitter who has difficulty hitting homers is said to have warning track power, meaning that its as far as he can hit it.
WaveThe wave is a group activity performed by the crowd where fans rise with their hands in the air en masse, section after section, giving the illusion of a wave going through the crowd.
WhiffA strikeout
WindupA pitcher's delivery when no runners are on base in a stealing position. The windup is a longer motion that has a bigger leg kick and should theoretically give the pitcher more power.
Winter MeetingsA yearly event in a warm destination where General Managers and team officials gather to talk trades and talk about league business.
