One of the first interesting data elements that TBC began tracking in 2002 was player high schools. It was interesting seeing which players went to the same high school and providing a historical view of a school's draft picks and alumni. The initial load of high school data was sourced from Sporting News Baseball Registers and a graduating high school was linked to as many players as possible. The first load of draft data also included another influx of high school data and thus the creation of the High School section which allowed for the listing of all known alumni for a school. Since then, high schools have been researched for players on a regular basis and though its completion will forever be a moving target, you can still get an interesting view of a high school's alumni on its page.
TBC has also collected basic high school information such as team nickname and colors with some schools having addresses and an external link to its home page. The schools are organized by state and is available for only the US and Canada.
Where does the information come from?I certainly haven't combed through a Rocky-Mountain sized pile of High School yearbooks to find a player's graduating high school but I have used whatever means available for research. This includes and is not limited to:
Accuracy and CompletenessThere is no guarantee that the high school assigned to each player is correct. Its possible that the school is not the graduating school or that it is listed in the wrong city or town. Its possible that its nowhere near the right school. It is possible to let us know by updating player profiles from the "Edit Player Profile" link on each player page. A player may only be assigned to one school within our system.
Its also important to note that from the school page perspective, the list of players under a given school will not be complete. The criteria for inclusion is that the player is already listed on the site (under the player inclusion rules) and that the school has been assigned to him. If a player is on the site and the school has not yet been assigned, let us know through the "Edit Player Profile" link.
Mistakes?Yes, there are mistakes. There may be schools listed twice in two different cities. There may be players assigned to the wrong school. There may be mis-spelled schools or schools that have changed names and are listed with their old and new name. I'm not an American High School expert (I'm not even American!) and I do the best I can to keep the section interesting.
And please, this is very important as I've had dozens of people make this mistake... Don't send me an email saying you went to LHS and you want to be includes. There is no way I know what LHS means and you'd be better served to send me the exact high school name and town.
