Coaches

Baseball Coaches refer to paid assistant coaches who are active on the baseball field during a game. Though for MLB, we track more than just on-field personnel, for other leagues, the above description applies as a definitive rule. Managers and General Managers are listed in a different section.

Starting with the Majors, we should have a pretty close history of all Major League Coaches though for certain earlier seasons are tough to track. Either because they didn't have many coaches or they were not officially named or captured. In either case, the closer we get to the present, the more likely there are more coaches listed.

For the Minors, teams generally have 2-3 coaches on staff. Normally a Hitting Coach and Pitching Coach and sometimes a generic Assistant Coach or an other fancy-pants-named coach. The range of years for Minor coaches is 1977 to present with much more difficulty in tracking down historical coaches for the 1970s and 1980s.

For College, we have Division I coaches since 2002 with some holes in the data as well for early to mid-2000s, most likely because I don't think I was tracking them back then. Who can remember. I can say for certain that we track them now and each school will show about 2-3 paid assistant coaches. This means that Volunteer Assistants and other titled coaches are excluded. Jobs such as Recruiting Coordinator or Team Manager or Director of Operations are excluded even though they are directly related to baseball. I had to draw the line somewhere.

The only other assistant coaches that we actively track are Indy League assistants but no disrepsect intended to these leagues but my effort level on capturing this data is lazy at best.

Finally, coaches are added near the beginning of each season in the spring, sometimes after the season starts depending on priorities. The coaching jobs are grouped together on a Person's page where you can see the entirety of a person's captured baseball job history.
